In general: Born 1945, Professor of Periodontology, School of Dentistry, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen. DDS 1971, PhD 1976, Board Certified Specialist in Oral Surgery 1983, DrOdont 1985. 10 years employment at Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital of Copenhagen. Professor and Chairman from 1988 at Department of Periodontology, and 2014-19 Section Head (Periodontology, Oral Microbiology, Surgery, Pathology, Physiology, Radiology and Community Dentistry), School of Dentistry, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Honorary Doctor, Sahlgrenska Academy, Göteborg University 2005. Also Guest Professor and Chairman, Department of Periodontology, School of Dentistry, Aarhus University 2008-12, and Adjunct Professor 2012-17. 

Teaching Activities: Undergraduate teaching of dental and medical students since 1971. Postgraduate education activity with around 450 courses, seminars and guest lectures for dentists and physicians at home and abroad including specialist courses for oto-, rhino-, laryngologists and dermatologists, and guest lectures in Europe, Africa, America, South America, Russia and Asia. DANIDA short-term expert in China 1983 and 1987. 1994-2006 member, Danish Dental Association’s Board of Education and Danish Council of Health Educations 1999-2003. 

Research: National and international research on pathogenic aspects of diseases of the oral mucosa and periodontal tissues. Current research on the relation between oral and medical diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Initiator of and supervisor for 27 PhD projects. Around 320 publications in national and international journals and textbooks. H-Index: 70 (Google Scholar), 52 (Web of Science), 50 (Scopus).

Editorial Functions: Associate Editor / Editorial Board Member for 5 international dental journals (J Clin Periodontol, J Oral Pathol Med, Acta Odontol Scand, Crit Rev Oral Biol Med, Oral Dis). Referee for 30 international medical and dental journals. Member of the editorial staff of Danish Dental Journal from 1991 and of the editorial staff of the Nordic Odontological Yearbook from 1997, Editor-in-Chief 2000-21. Editor-in-chief of Oral Health and Preventive Dentistry 2002-14 and of Acta Odontologica Scandinavica from 2014. Odontological editor of the Medical Handbook from 2013. 

Other activities: Since 1990 member of more than 130 expert committees in Scandinavia, Britain, Arabia, Asia and the U.S. President, Danish Section of the International Association for Dental Research 1987-92. Organizer and chairman and vice-chairman of international conferences including two EU-funded conferences in Copenhagen 1990. Expert, Danish Board of Health and appointed Dental Examiner for Danish Medico-Legal Council and for the Board of Appeal on Dental Injuries. From 1998 Member of the Board of Scandinavian Society of Periodontology, President 2003-06 and 2013-16. Member of International Association for Dental Research Committee on Ethics in Dental Research 2001-04, Chairman 2003-04. Member of the Danish Committee on Scientific Dishonesty in Health Science 2006-14. President of the Danish Academy of Periodontology 2009-20. Vice-Chairman, CAG Greater Copenhagen Research Centre for Systemic Low-Grade Inflammation 2019-22. 

Awards: Dandy-Foundation, Danish Academy of Parodontology’s Foundation, Ingeborg and Leo Dannins Foundation for Scientific Research. Danish Dental Association's Health Award 2007. Simon Spies Foundation Jubilee Award 2008. Honorary Member Danish Dental Association 2011. Scandinavian Dental Societies Bensow Award 2018. Scandinavian Society of Periodontology’s Jens Wærhaug Award 2022.

External funding: Since 2000 personally received DKK 4,080,000 and since 2007 in collaboration with others received DKK 18 million from various funds.
