VESICULO-BULLOUS ORAL MUCOSAL LESIONS
Blistering in the oral mucosa may occur due to different
reasons. The most frequent cause of blistering in the oral
mucosa is viral infections, including herpes simplex and
Varicella-Zoster virus infections. Here, the blisters primar-
ily present as vesicles, fluid accumulations of less than 5 mm
that appear in clusters. Blisters in the oral mucosa can also be
caused by specific autoimmune diseases, mainly pemphigus
vulgaris and pemphigoid. The blisters are characterized as
bullae, which bursts easily and leave behind an eroded mu-
cous membrane, which is covered by fibrin. A blistering oral
mucosal disease is often associated with pain and discomfort.
In this article, the most common diseases giving rise to blis-
tering in the oral mucosa are reviewed.
